about

On the first record, I spent a lot of breath bashing my Mom for things I thought were her fault... Horrible, I know. As I got a little older and away from the situation, not to mention battling through substance abuse and addiction problems of my own, my understanding of things became a lot more clear. I was able to stop blaming her for things that went wrong growing up. Flashback was an attempt to make amends to her and put to rest the last of the bullshit I was holding on to. I used the four note theme in this song a different way than the others. Its placement in the title track and Stranger Things is as an unresolved melody. It stayed unresolved in those tracks because I wanted the listener to feel the tension, to feel that things are not quite over yet. It was the exact opposite for Flashback. I wanted to resolve the melody here to symbolically put to rest any undead issues I was holding onto with my Mom. Jay Seeman, a good friend of our producer Derek Garten, did all of the sound design you hear in the background. I couldn't believe the amazing job he did... walking hand in hand with the story and meaning of the song through the use of sound effects. This was a last minute track that I am very glad we took a chance on. - Josh

lyrics

grip get a grip get a grip she said as she paced down the hall it was 1983 and she didn't know much at all about raising a kid or making him right or holding him close like she'd plan to without harming his life but she said get a grip kathy lynn he's gonna be here soon so get a grip kathy lynn you're gonna be his star so get a grip a grip kathy lynn you're gonna be his star in nine
